Anatomy of a Return
« on: January 04, 2010, 05:41:45 AM »
I don't know why I try, but every few months, I try to login to Avalon. Inevitably, my few hours in the land follow this timeline:

10 pm: This vodka is amazing. Oh hey, you know what else was amazing? Playing Avalon! Yes!

10:30 pm: HI EVERYONE! I had fun here before! I love you all!

10:45 pm: MSN - OMG! NARISSA! ARE YOU COMING BACK???

11:00 pm: Having told some great stories and having been reminded of the fun I had, I have decided that I never should have quit playing! I shall restock myself for a real return!

11:03 pm: Oh. Wtf. Some seer has cursed me with foolsgold. I can't buy anything.

11:05 pm: Predictably, the skill is buggy and I can't cure it.

11:10 pm: 3-4 people jump me. Just "...because...."

11:30 pm: Wtf, I'm Mercinean?

11:45 pm: Whatever, roll with it. Hey, newbs, here are some combat tip- OMFG WHY AM I UNCONSCIOUS.

11:46 pm: Recover consciousness.

11:47 pm: "Well, hey now. Why are you repeatedly attacking me, Order Mates?"

11:48 pm: "You lost DP! Heeehee!"

11:49 pm: "Err, I've been dormant 2 years?"

11:50 pm: "Yes, but you were somebody, at some point. You must be crushed!"

11:51 pm: "I am crushed."

11:52 pm: In my short return, I've been teamed, cursed, robbed, and people have tried to strip me. This is in addition to the random insults, such as fuck, bitch, cunt and so on. Maybe a return was a bad idea.

11:53 pm: "Weakling."

11:55 pm: Yerp. QQ.

11:56 pm: MSN - "OMFG WHY DID YOU QQ!"

11:57 pm: MSN - "It was me, baby, not you."

12:01 am: MSN - "Well...hey...will you come back for Ordination?"

Well, Dunccan and Sajora, predictably, as well as Esprii. The one that really threw me for a loop was Cordon, though, since I thought we were rather decent friends OOC.

I'm all for killing old enemies, no matter how long they've been gone, but you gotta give people some time to get back into things if gone awhile...

Dunccan... what can I say there, that's Dunccan

Sajora... has been just crazy fighting lately

Cordon... that is odd

I would have thought you'd say Salvador, seeing as he's changed a bit with his new specialisation bullshit...

Loved when you played.  Probably one of the best role players in av.  I'm of a mind that when a player returns from dormancy he/she should be given a bit of a grace period to restock and get the "rust" out.  A tell, a message, and its very easy to see if someone is combat/jump worthy.

I had a sneaking suspicion this was the case. Whatever the case, it was fun to pretend for a bit that the guild was going to have a decent amount of girls running around stealing the experience, purses and perhaps a few hearts.

Was really looking forward to learning from you.  Hopefully if you decide to give it a go again, people will cut you a bit of slack.

Honestly, it's never the vodka to blame. It's a good catalyst to get me to login, but in the end, it's the playerbase who turns me off again. Last time I logged in, I had lost all my settings - and was stripped of nearly everything I owned within a few hours. This time, I was repeatedly screwed with by seers and jumped by old enemies - and people just seemed to shrug and say "That's life."

But, really, it's not. 90% of games out that have some respect for that fact that the players are RL people. If others go "Hey, chill out on the senile old lady for a few days" - something I ALWAYS did as a Princess and GM - you'd probably see more people come back. Part of being a good player is prodding your pals/underlings when they are acting like tools.

Who did the stripping, and yuo can always ask Genesis for help.

I know he can be a tool sometimes too, but he does give in to sense, with regards to stripping.

He's has gotten my things returned to me more than once for bugs, disconnects, bullshit things...

I am sorry that happened! At least they could have waited until your settings are back to strip you :P

That's probably the reason I didn't return and stick around. It's definitely not to the extent that you went through, but not being able to be back for a good 10 minutes and already having people start completely screwing you over is -quite- the turnoff.

Of course, I'm quite happy with what I'm doing now, but I can't say I'll be able to stay away forever.

Well of course he's changed, he's being played by Alister.

And he was good enough to jump and strip me the other night when I logged in to taunt Nostradamus for returning - how good of him to remind me of why I quit and ensure that I not change my mind and return.

Well, they say you'll believe anything. Yeesh.
