(ooc) I believe it was 1998 that I found out about Muds, with my "new" 486 and a really bad dialup connection. Tired of "Duke Nukem" I found one mud called "Gemstone" (I think) and shortly thereafter I came upon Avalon. Back then, Avalon was pay-per-hour, and I hate to think of the amount of cash I sunk into it. The dollar to pounds coversion wasn't any better than it is today. I believe I was addicted before I even knew what a mud client was or knew an alias from a hole in the ground. But as all of us here know...Avalon is monkey on your back, and 11 years later, I'm still here.
My earliest recollection after being born into Mercinae is of Katherine. She was so kind and had the patience of a saint. Somehow I knew though, that pacifistic life was not going to be for me and I was recruited by Enchanter Alkadar of Parrius. Life was chaotic and intimidating, to be sure, and shortly after I became homesick. I was welcomed back to Mercinae by Culinane; whom I believe was Prince at the time, and began studying back in the Mages guild, under the Guild-Master Fredegar.
I cannot remember specific events from those early days, but images of having my rear-end saved by Culinane, Sturge, Plaman (yes, Plaman), Fredegar, Kes and Bumble come to mind. Daily battles with Panaideos, Threap, Zenichiro, Arthur and Lilandrin were the norm, and harvest time was just pure exciting chaos. Back then, if you found someone was considering you, it was a warning, not a curiosity; and an official challenge was just an announcement to the land that someone was about to attempt to hand you your behind, there was no waiting for you to return the challenge. The fighting would commence whether you were ready or not.
----More thoughts to come.
