Graphics Card Help!
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:31:46 PM »
OK. I’ve been looking for advice on graphics cards. I have a new computer that is a midrange level desktop. I’ve done research on the brand and capabilities of my desktop and have found out that the two best options for my configuration and hardware are a “512 MB NVIDIA 8500GT,” or a “256 MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT.” Thing is, I can’t find many reviews or comparisons of either of them. I’m currently using an Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 (Intel GMA 3100).

I’ve read the major criticism of Nvidia is that they don’t have any real third party driver functionality, as they refuse to share their specifications with open source compilers. However, I’ve read a blog by a guy who says his ATI card made his computer run slower, and he had trouble doing some sort of programming mumbo-jumbo.

I just want a card for my spouse to play games like fallout three, and the upcoming Sims three games, with the option of being able to throw other relatively high processing games at it.

try these websites for reviews. they are from newegg.com
you will see colored eggs just under the thumbnail of the item and you can click on the number to get to read the reviews

I personally would recommend Nvidia as I've had a lot of issues with ATI cards.
Another thing you need to know, is if it is PCI Express or AGP.

Needed to look up what you were talking about.

I’m guessing I have PCI Express? According to wikipedia, the GPA are being phased out and that they’re pretty rare now-a-days. Is there any way I can find out for sure?

In either case, I’m planning on getting a Best Buy geek squad dude to install whatever card I get. I have a dell inspiron 530 with (intel core 2 duo e7300 266ghz processor), and after opening it up, I find it not even close to being as user friendly as my old dell dimension desktop.

OK. Did some poking around my hardware manager and I definitely have PCI Express. Is that a good thing?

PCI Express does run faster than AGP, so I prefer PCI Express.

Were you able to look up those reviews?

I would also suggest if you decide on ATI to get 512MB, not 256MB.

:)

Hope that helps!
