Suggestion: Spoiler Tags for Quests
« on: July 02, 2007, 09:55:39 AM »
Hi,

Not sure if these exist already or not, however a set of spoiler tags that hides away text, until highlighted, would be pretty good in the quests area, along with a style guide for posting.

E.g. Brief description of the quest with some minor hints, followed by the full walkthrough, item numbers etc in spoiler tags.

This would allow those looking for a bit of a challenge to browse through for any quests they haven't seen before and attempt to do them for themselves, without having to view the full solution.

Just a thought.

Another idea that may fit into this would be retrieving information from the Guildhouse (via the Wayback Machine), and attributing the information here to the original poster by utilizing the "quote" coding.  This could be useful for quests or any other board feature.

I've tried to impliment spoiler tags, however as of yet, the modification to add them is not compatible with the latest version of these forums, but should be in a few weeks.
Some people are like Slinkies. They have no practical use whatsoever, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

It's not hard at all, just do this:

SUPER SECRET QUEST INFO

(highlight the above lines)

Though, with that said, I don't really like seeing step by step explicit instructions given out. It kinda kills things a bit.

I agree with Narissa.  I think clever directions and explanations for quests that almost - but not quite give the instructions are far better.  Leaving something to be discovered or figured out.

The problem is, I can actually read that without highlighting... maybe I just have sharper eyes than you  :P Mostly, though, this is to do with the two tones of background.

I do agree with yourself and Orielle that the preferred method would be to have hints and not spoilers, however, looking ahead to the likelyhood that spoilers are, at some point, going to be used, the tags would mean that everyone could safely browse through quests for ideas on what to try your hand at next without inadvertently reading a solution.

Of course it wouldn't necessarily need to be a full in depth solution, but perhaps more specific hints, clues or advice than given originally.

Really, it's just a 'try to please all sides' solution  :)

When I (briefly) played Kingdom of Loathing, I enjoyed the tradition of providing quest hints only in limericks.

None of the quests in Avalon are hard, they might require more than one person or some speedy work to beat a reset but why should anyone get hints?
Far more interesting, and I had a good list a few years ago, would be a list of quests and possibly the start location or location of the item required to start it and more importantly to save time, the requirements.

I have been in Avalon on and off since almost the beginning, trust me you dont need hints just patience and a bit of hard work. Remember not all quests still work or only partly work.

I'm guessing half the land has my quest hints page by now, since they've been on 3 forums, and I'm sure some infiltrant copied them to merc/sd forums as well! These are what I've been giving and they seem to work well enough, without ruining the spirit of things:

Quote
Shortsword Quest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Silver is used to vanquish the undead. There is a silver shortsword near path entrance. It can be used to kill the wight in the Greenwood. The wight is west of Eleusis, then southeastish, near the hermit, in a cave. Jab him with the sword to get gold. Don't take the crown, or you will become a wight yourself!

Item Number: Shortsword208

Shilling Quest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you explore the roads south of the Pool of Life, you will discover a tavern tucked in the foothills. In the downstairs room of the tavern, there is a tankard and a watch. Doing the typical actions (eg sip and wind...) with these items may yield suprising results....

Item Numbers: watch46 and tankard47

Fountain Quest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the gates of Astrea's Delta, there is a ruined fountain. Located in the woods northwest of the village are the implements needed to repair it - mud, rocks and a spackle.

Item Numbers: Mud693, Spade694, Rock695

Scarecrow Quest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a field northish from Nassau, you can find a note left by a distressed farmer, desperately in need of a scarecrow. Westish of Kristanisti you can find a ruined one, and the implements to bring him back up to scratch can be found in Nassau.

Item Numbers: Straw648, Clothing649, Scarecrow650

etc. I think anything that gives away more than that is really too much. Yes, everyone automates them eventually, but might as well give the kids something to do other than pan!

p.s. Make sure to explain ucklice first, so they can locate the items to see if they are reset, since trying to figure out a quest if the items aren't there sucks a LOT.
