Message #129.

From: Loki, the god of fire [God].
To  : Everyone.
Subj: The Sapphire gem quest.

Time marches ever onwards, Avalon has moved into the start of a new cycle and things are beginning to pick up pace.

The first gem quest in the search for a new member of the pantheon will be held on Saturday, June 21st. I will be presiding over the quest for the divine Sapphire, the quest will begin at 8pm by the Avalon clock.

The Sapphire is the gem of Equilibrium, so expect a balanced contest. However with the upcoming warfare additions, it would be wise to expect the scales to be tipped in that direction.

I encourage all to participate. If you needed reminding, this is the first step on the road to the ultimate prize, so prepare yourselves.

Loki, the god of fire

Written by my hand on the 11th of Ilmarael, in the year 1212.

Some people are like Slinkies. They have no practical use whatsoever, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

So, anyone badgered him for details about the exact format yet?  :D

Older versions of this gemquest suggest the choosing of champions and flagquests and such? (Cue oldies for more info please..)

That was just Mephisto on crack. It's hardly a standard format.

Edit: Mephisto on crack, designing a gem quest that Sajora would ultimately end up winning. (ie all the stupid rule changes, etc - I didn't participate in this one, but Kiarn will give you an earful if you ask her, I bet).

Ahhh! I thought the story about the conflicting brothers was something that had traditionally set it that way. That's very curious, thanks Narissa. And lol @Mephisto. I don't think i've ever seen him OFF crack....

With a bump your consciousness returns, you open your eyes and step in an instant off the ship which has borne you so far.
You are carried away from your white-sailed ship on a flow of bright white lights, borne down to the shore surrounded by flapping gulls. You stand, facing your world, and spin joyfully. The
white-sailed ship slinks away.
By the Pool of Life.

The sands of time have two minutes left to fall.

Rough pathway approaching the mountain.
A flag bearing the emblem of a pair of crossed cutlasses has
been raised proudly here. (A quarry has been opened in the ground here by some diligent pick-work.) The quarry, you surmise, would be
suitable for two more batches of flint. There are potentially seven slabs of marble just waiting to be diligently picked from the quarry.

I would probably think Avalon was on crack, if Kiarn won a gem. :'(

I would think Avalon was on crack if a premeditated losing team was established to knock out a strong contender.

OH WAIT.

From: Loki, the god of fire [God].

Subj: The Sapphire gem quest.

The Sapphire quest is almost complete, with only the last of 3 rounds to be fully resolved.

The first round was a test of Avalon knowledge and geography. Tukar excelled and far outstripped the
rest of the competition to place first by a mile, with Narissa and Foxedup coming in second and
third respectively.

These three were meant to be the captains in the second round, a group sands quest. Tukar's legendary
avarice tipped the scales of the competition however as all he desired was gold, not the Sapphire.
He auctioned off his place as captain to the highest bidder as his prize for winning so
convincingly.

Narissa placed the highest bid and named Llavendar as the third captain. The teams were chosen, and
although there were grumblings about the members of the third team the sands quest itself was a very
close affair.

Narissa's team held the sands for most of the first half of the quest, in the latter half Foxedup's
team spent more and more time in possession. The last 5 minutes were chaotic, with the all three
teams holding them at some point as the sands were changing hands rapidly.

In the last 20 seconds Narissa stole the sands from her fellow captain and guildmate Foxedup, and
managed to hold onto them until the time ran out: eliminating all but her team members from the
competition.

So congratulations Narissa, India, Rakira, Trakea, Lamothe and Cadmus. You won a very close contest,
and have progressed into the final round of individual combat. The draw was as follows: Rakira vs
India, Trakea vs Narissa and Cadmus vs Lamothe.

Rakira and India have completed their fight, with India emerging victorious from her deathtrap of a
stable where she lured her opponent. The other two bouts have had to be postponed due to time
issues. Trakea is scheduled to fight Narissa tomorrow at midnight, and Cadmus to fight Lamothe at
8pm on Monday (both by the Avalon clock).

Once these are done and the final two fights are scheduled, whoever emerges victorious will be
granted the right to pool the Sapphire atop the pinnacle.

Let me quote the actual HELP file on the SAPPHIRE.

The Sapphire is the gem of Equilibrium, so expect a balanced contest.

Bahahahaha....

Probably the most unbalanced gem quest I've seen. But knowing who was in charge, it doesn't surprise me.

The team setup was pretty rotten of me, maybe, but everyone had the option to bid. In the end, it didn't matter, since the sands came down to that crazy melee in Sapience, with everyone attacking everyone and grabbing them back and forth.

1. Yes it was. A gem quest should never be decided that way.
2. A gem quest should never be decided by money. Unless the gem could help a pacifist like Tukar and/or Fatalus
3. My whole team was trying, Your whole team was trying... Salvador was trying (Not his team).

*shrug* It's over and in the past, but I hope Loki doesn't allow things like that to happen in the future. Everyone deserves a chance on a good team.

Why should a gem quest never be affected by money? Things like power, tactics and scheming are just as much at the heart of Avalon's power balance as the ability to swing a sword. Gem quests are not about finding the best fighter, although combat tends to be involved - rather, they are about offering unique circumstances for people to work within; adaptation, trickery and creative solutions are almost always involved in choosing the final winner.

I don't regret manipulating one team. I think that was a smart move on our part as a city to get what we wanted. I regret that Salvador was the one taking the fall, and if I could re-do it, I'd change around how that had gone.

Everyone had a chance, Rajj - that's what the whole point of the bidding was. Anyone was free to bid to create their own team, and I made no secret that if we won the bidding, we'd be making a fall team to enable us a better shot.

In any case, I doubt this is something we'll see eye to eye on, quite likely because it was me doing the manipulating. I wonder if there would be such an outcry if a less-hated person had been the one orchestrating it, eh?

Or less of an outcry if YOU particularly had been the one that got pole-axed before it had even begun? Everyone did NOT have a chance, and whatever happened at the end, it was still split 10-10-1 by who was actually fighting.

Would it have been horribly unfair or just creative tactics if someone decided they would screw you?
