Jalice: The Magic Behind the Madness
« on: June 01, 2008, 12:41:34 PM »
Jalice was born to mother Ebele, a loyal worshipper of the God of Light Apollo, and father Aberash, a free-spirited pirate of the high seas who frequently docked in Parrius and traveled the land in mysterious solitude. Ebele was known to be sweet and kind, yet persistent when it came to her beliefs in the Light. Aberash, name meaning ‘giving off light’ was found to be born with a tendency to be able to wield strong magic through his body. However, liking to keep to himself and blend into the shadows, he never realized the potency for which this magic could be mustered. Ebele made her dwelling in the woods not far from Mercinae so that she was within walking distance of the Temple. On her walk on the road just north of Mercinae Ebele met Aberash and instantly the two were drawn to each other intimately. Nine months later a baby girl was given them to which they named Jalice. Growing up Jalice did not see much of her father as he would disappear into the wide blue sea for months at a time, but when he did return she always remembered him bouncing her on his knee and telling her tales of pirates having grand adventures and finding lands beyond Avalon. Twelve years went by and soon another child, this time a son was born to Ebele and Aberash whom they named Jabari meaning “brave, strong hearted”. However, they noticed that similar to Jalice this baby held extraordinary powers of magic early on and realized that the two working together may grow up to be a powerful force. For Light or for Dark they did not know.

However, Someone out there did know and one cold winter night Ebele was walking back from Mercinae after finishing her daily worship, with Jalice by her side and baby Jabari in her arms. Upon approaching their humble, yet inviting little cottage something Dark seemed to lurk in the shadows. Ebele motioned to Jalice to stay quiet, hid her in the bushes outside the cottage placing Jabari in Jalice’s arms as she ventured further into the house. Jalice sat in the dark for what seemed like hours only to hear the ear piercing screams of her mother sobbing, blood covering her face stumbling from the house entrance. Ebele tripped and fell to the ground right in front of the bush concealing Jalice and Jabari as she was stalked by some unseen monster. With mournful eyes, Ebele looked at Jalice mouthed the words “I love you” and with one final shriek the monster leaped and finished its vengeful deed soaking the earthen forest in blood and leaving Jalice to forever remember the memory of that wretched night. Tears streaming down her face, Jalice held Jabari close to smother any sound that may give away their location and stayed hidden in the bushes until the first rays of dawn poked through the frozen landscape. Jalice returned to the house only to find her father, blood stained and cold lying dead on the dirt floor. Knowing Jalice could not take care of her baby brother by herself she set off for Mercinae in search of a home for him. It was in Mercinae that Jalice stumbled across a very plain, yet friendly folk named Delphine and Lucien. She watched them, unnoticed for several hours then when night fell kissed little Jabari goodbye, placed him on the doorstep, knocked and ran off to hide behind the trees, all the while praying to Apollo that he may stay safe. Delphine and Lucien were surprised to find a baby on their step but considered it a gift from the gods and lovingly nurtured him and named him by the name he is called to this day……Algernon. Little did Jalice know that they were both still being hunted and her act finalized a death sentence for both Delphine and Lucien.

For the remaining years, Jalice stuck around Mercinea going to school, making her bed underneath the warm breeze and brilliant stars in the summer and the cozy straw of stables in the winter. She retained the wandering spirit of her father, yet seemed to soak up her mother’s kindness and mercy. She secretly kept watch over Algernon during these long years never letting on to who she was. After she graduated school in 1175 she was approached by Abdul and with the help of India, learned what her magical powers could do for her and finally found a family of sorts with the Mage Guild. Not long after, much to her surprise Algernon joined the Mages. And while Jalice was thrilled with the opportunity to establish a relationship with her long lost brother, she secretly labored under the secret that she kept from him. As time passed, Algernon and Jalice’s bond grew closer and for fear that she would reveal this secret before Algernon was ready, Jalice left the Mages guild and headed to the city she heard so much in her father’s stories, Parrius. There, in 1204 she joined the Enchanters guild. She took on the role of Head Tutor in 1205 and became Guildmistress in 1208. In Parrius, Jalice found friendship with one of her first friends in the land Limorien, a gallant warrior yet one who embodied all of the fine dining and excitement told to her in stories past. She also found a love that she had been missing her whole life with Warrior Mido. Not only did he prove to be a trusted friend but became the rock on which she relied. Along with her many other friends from both Mercinae and Parrius, Jalice finally started to settle into a life in which she felt safe and secure. However, that was not to last. As danger grew in the land, Jalice finally had to unveil the long awaited secret to Algernon of the past they share together. Together, the two must decode their destiny encrypted in a lullaby sung to Jalice every night by Ebele before she went to sleep. Whether they will unite and be a cleansing force for the Light or whether they will ultimately battle each other for differing ideals of Good has yet to be seen.

This revelation about Algernon's parents threw him into a real tailspin.  He felt strangely betrayed by his late foster parents at the same time that he felt as if he had lost them all over again.

As he assimilates this difficult information, he has been laying low and is sometimes crotchety, and the apprentices have started whispering about their beloved absent-minded Head Tutor "not seeming himself."  There have even been rumors that he has grown disheartened with magic and may give up on the magical arts altogether, to get as far away from this strange prophecy as he can.

But you cannot run away from karma - even in Avalon.
