Feats of Diplomacy
« on: September 19, 2007, 04:52:35 PM »
As my character slowly trains at his profession and struggles with the cruelties of wartime, his namesake in the Other Land is wondering about an aspect to the game potentially as influential as the arts of combat: diplomacy.

Sometimes the inter-tribal belligerence, and the politics of making and keeping enemies and shutting down cordial dialogue with "the bad people," creates an impression that combat is the only way to negotiate differences, aid one's city, and influence the world of Avalon.  Is this true, or have artful acts of diplomacy among characters been just as momentous?

Diplomacy, manipulation, politics, etc all are important - even if it's just getting people to do the fighting via recruiting key people to be citizens (eg Plaman bribing me to Parrius with a Ministry). Zeni is probably the best example of diplomacy amongst the populace. The Thieves are perhaps the best example of delicate relations both as a unit, and to the gods. We've had MANY situations where tangled and tricky negotiation has been the answer, other than brute force - such as the time Apollo randomly moved our guildhouse directly into the path of an incoming army. Quick talking, a few fast promises, and recollection of past debts and such helped sort that, and many other, situations out. With the divine, diplomacy is the ONLY answer, really...

Naturaly, what can you give them that they can't already give themselves, save for service and promise of future deeds?

If you are unable to hold a conversation, sway people with your charisma or rouse people with an oratory, you're really going to struggle in a text-based world.

One of the problems of Avalon has been the increasing discouragement from showing any kind of weakness, particularly for the young. And worse, castigating any that do and anyone who would teach them a lesson.

For example, how often have we seen youngsters encouraged to join in attacks on larger, immeasurably more powerful people from enemies cities? This is almost always during teams. All the time.

Then if that large, powerful person finds a moment to demonstrate the folly of the youngster in his attempt to take advantage of a weak moment, and demands an apology or a promise not to attack again. What do the youngsters fellow citizens and guildsmen say? "Never!" "He can't touch you", or "your items are easy to replace", "xp is meaningless and easy to replace", "rides are meaningless and easy to replace", etc.

And surprise, surprise, if the larger person then attacks or has any kind of unfriendly interaction with that younger fool, he is labelled a bully or whining to the gods occurs.

It is far better roleplay if a youngster chooses to involve himself with offensive action against someone clearly much more powerful than themselves, they use the very valuable opportunity to develop their negotiation skills and get theirself out of the mess, rather than be encouraged to give the two finger salute.

They should also bear in mind that they aren't showing weakness, they are showting strategic nouse. Fighting a battle you can't hope to win is rarely of any benefit. Far better to live to fight another day, etc.

Ultimately, don't get mad, get even. Grudges are one of life's little pleasures.

No filter beyond self moderation. If you're on the Internet, you've been exposed.
